Why a blog?

You may be asking why I chose the context of college students in relation to food and health concerns.

Well, I am a college student. My friends are college students. The majority of people that I surround myself with are college-aged people. I’m also living on campus this semester, which gives me a prime opportunity to observe my fellow college students, as well as take a closer look at how I interact with food and health decisions on campus.

I’m going to be doing participatory observations at two main dining areas at on the UVM campus: The Marketplace (located in the Davis Center) and The Marche (located in the Living/Learning Center). These places have the most traffic with lots of people coming in and out, eating, working, etc. Their hours are also very reasonable, making it more accessible to students. I felt that this would provide me with a good context in which to observe people.

  1. Absolutely – probably should have mentioned that earlier!

The name of the blog is a play on the popular board game “Apples to Apples.” My thought for the name is that it would represent the myriad of food choices that college students face now that they are on their own without someone cooking dinner for them every night, and how they navigate and interact with that world of food. This includes everything from the very healthy “Apples” to the very unhealthy cereal “Applejacks.”
